Special projects

A project created by architect Paolo Scoglio’s THE NE[S]T studio

The Open Air Future exhibition is one of the special projects presented in Hall D5 of 2024’s InOut | The Hospitality Community.

Every year InOut engages artists, visionary architects and hospitality professionals to create exhibitions and installations designed to inspire the hotels of tomorrow.

Open Air Future showcases the prototype of the [TREE]SHIP architectural project, conceived by architect Paolo Scoglio's THE NE[S]T architects’ studio, as part of the [X]SHIP, Extreme Sustainable Human Innovative Pod research and development programme, intended to explore the most extreme sustainable solutions in outdoor experiential tourism.

[TREE]SHIP represents the perfect synthesis of love for nature and technological innovation, which have always been the stylistic hallmark of the internationally renowned Italian studio.

With the [TREE]SHIP project, the architect wishes to explore a futuristic idea of hospitality, presenting an accommodation solution that can inspire entrepreneurs and players in outdoor experiential tourism. This project sets itself apart for its use of innovative materials and sustainable technologies, capable of responding to environmental stimuli. The project is a practical application of how architecture can merge with nature, developing sustainable forms of building and hospitality that foster a harmonious interaction between people and the planet.

[TREE]SHIP is thus a manifesto for a new model of tourism, in which humans and trees learn to coexist in a spirit of reciprocity and collaboration.

The project was born out of a desire to bring guests into a true symbiosis with natural elements, giving them a night under the stars, off the ground and connected to the Tree as a living system.

THE STRUCTURE

Connected to the Base-Tree and resting on its metal feet, a hatch opens from the small cabin, allowing guests to enter and enjoy a truly immersive experience in nature, a connection with a near future, which is evocative and planet-friendly.

THE MATERIALS

The [TREE]SHIP project represents a futuristic vision of hospitality, realised with innovative materials and advanced digital fabrication technology. The module consists of a recycled aluminium endoskeleton, parametrically modelled and CNC-machined, and high-performance composite cladding. Thanks to bio-responsive technologies, the module reacts to environmental stimuli, integrating sustainability and generative design.

The [TREE]SHIP prototype is being showcased at InOut 2024 in its pioneering version for Club del Sole in the UNESCO Biosphere of Lido di Spina and in its [RIVER]SHIP version for River Tribe, intended for the beautiful location of the Pollino National Park in Calabria, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

"[TREE]SHIP comes to Earth to bring humans a message that it is possible to exist on our Planet in a conscious and responsible way."
